Hojyu tai is known as Kame yatai (Turtle float).

The turtle on the roof were made from 1818 to 1830 by Takagaki and his son.

Since Takayama is an inland region and travel was extremely difficullt in those days, the carvvers never had an oppotunity to see turtles; thus, the artists created turtle with human-like heads and ears.
